If you have a problem, whether big or small, and no matter what type of difficulty, the place to go for help is your local Citizen’s Advice Bureau. The CAB has years of experience and their information is constantly updated, so you are certain of getting the right advice. This is a voluntary organisation, staffed by trained volunteers, and you are assured of complete confidentiality. You can get free and independent advice on benefits, housing, debt, or just be signposted to the right organisation to approach.

C.A.B's History

There are nearly 3,400 locations where the C.A.B. operates.

It is quite astonishing to realise that the first 200 bureaux were opened on 4th September 1939, the day after war was declared. The government of the day had realised that as the threat of war loomed, there was a need for some type of advice agency; they had therefore investigated how this might best be done, and the idea of the C.A.B. was born. At this time, advisers dealt with problems such as lost ration books, homelessness and evacuation; they helped to find missing relatives, and debt was from the start an important issue, because due to the main wage earners being called up for military service, those left behind were on very reduced incomes.

C.A.B Today

Today there are nearly 3,400 locations where the C.A.B. operates, and in addition, dedicated telephone advice lines and the internet, with two main sites: www.citizensadvice.org.uk and www.adviceguide.org.uk. The main problems which the bureaux help with are debt, homelessness and benefits advice – so not much different from 1939! There are currently over 21,000 trained volunteers keeping the service running and year on year, the number of clients continues to rise.
